The White-breasted Nuthatch in the little woodlot off of Anglers Boulevard just south of Keith Wilson Road continues this morning. Enjoyed seeing it with the boys.
Great find yesterday for the Chilliwack CBC by Ed, Joel and Larry. Nicely done, gentlemen!

Definitely one of the last species I was expecting. Ed and I could hear this high-pitched chatter call, every now and then. I just assumed it was a RBNU, while Ed thought it was maybe a Mallard or some kind of woodpecker. Eventually, it showed itself long enough for us to get great views: White-breasted nuthatch by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr White-breasted nuthatch by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr

A Mallard isn't that far off of a thought on a mystery sound! That call a Mallard makes when happy (sort of a chuckle) has some similarities. Ah the ever present risks of heard only birds! Usually points one in the wrong direction, but, now and then, can point one away from a legit odd bird! ;D Another neat little bird we found there was a Pacific Wren with white primaries. When we first saw it, it really caught the eye as that white really flashes when in flight. _0233291 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr _0233305 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr

Checked on the nuthatch this afternoon with no luck. Didn’t put in too much time though.

Checked on the nuthatch this afternoon with no luck. Didn’t put in too much time though. I spent an hour a the woodlot on Monday and yesterday. I did not hear or see the nuthatch.

Nuthatch continues this morning in the woodlot, by the chain link fence.

Will be interesting to see how long it stays around. With feeders close by, it might be there for weeks.

Hi All,
The White-breasted Nuthatch continues on Dec 26 @ 11:30. Seen and heard giving loud rolling nuthatch call, in the trees just east of the feeders along the DND fence line.
Happy Boxing Day

It was there this afternoon. Not as much activity there during my visit. The feeders that someone maintains in the woods there are empty though.

Went out in the sunshine today for my fifth try at spotting the Nuthach, finally got to see him and snap a few shots. Thanks to Ed for spotting him high up in a cottonwood near the feeders but on the other side of the DND fence.

Benny and I popped in this afternoon for a look. We found it quite high up quietly squirreling seeds from one hiding place to another in a cottonwood. When it is doing that, it's easily overlooked. We heard it muttering as it worked only a couple times but it was faint and if not listening for it, I think we wouldn't even notice.

It was there yesterday when I popped by for possibly the coldest bit of birding I’ve ever done!

Stopped in to see if the nuthatch is surviving the cold and it is. Not a surprise they're hardy little birds. Despite the strong wind and rain to match, it doesn't mind being up high still. I figured it might be more focused on the more sheltered areas down lower. The area was crawling with birds and lots of Varied Thrush. Whoever feeds them spares no expense as another tube feeder is up to combat the cold and more suet. Also impressive is the tree nuts being fed. That goes for like $60 a 20lb bag! Every bird there is thankful.
