Hi All, We spotted a pair of Canadian Geese who took over an Eagle nest by the Fraser River near Abbotsford. They pulled the sides off to make it more into a flatter platform, high in a tall tree, and they stayed for a whole season. It was a nest used by eagles just 1 season earlier. I am new to birding but I am curious about this strategy--has anyone seen Canadian geese living so high and taking over a large nest? Thank you!

I haven't seen Geese take over Eagles nest but there was a spot on Annacis Island where Ospreys would build a nest on a piling. Every spring when they returned, a pair of Geese would be occupying the previous year's nest. This happened for a least 4 years in a row and the osprey would either rebuild a previously abandoned nest or make a new one. We moved to Abbotsford from Surrey and I wasn't able to monitor the site any more so the ritual may still be ongoing.

Fascinating and quite similar; the eagles moved a short distance away in this case too. Thank you!

I used to monitor a web cam in a eagles nest on eagle road. At first I had 2 eagles, then one morning I logged in and found a pair of Canada Geese restoring the nest. The eagles tried to get the geese out of the nest but the male goose would have nothing to do with it and defended the nest and mate. The 2 eagles gave up and moved across lougheed and built another nest. The geese laid 7 eggs and 6 hatched, 2 days later they jumped from the nest (95 feet) to the ground and made their way to the water. That nest has since fallen apart but I have some amazing photos from both the nest and the ground ( I was there when they all jumped)
