There were a large number of Ducks on Kawkawa Lake today, I took a good number of pictures in panorama for a count and possible identification. Looking at the pictures I realised I have got a lot better at species recognition from just the patterning. I was wondering what the more experienced birders could see in the poor distant photos. Looks like scaup, for the most part. Not sure about the others though.

Bufflehead and scaup in both pics. Looks likes a Western Grebe in the 1st pic. Lots of Mallards in the 2nd pic and what looks like a Common Merganser on the left side and a possibly a couple Hooded Mergansers.

Pretty sure I also see a fair number of Wigeon and some Goldeneye and Gadwall as well... I also thought about Western Grebe in that first photo, but it really gives me more of a Swan Goose vibe.

There were 3 Western Grebe on the lake, but only one in these pictures. It took ten pictures to cover this raft.
I did not find any gadwall.

On Picture 2 Counting from the left, very front row. the 4th bird (wigeon), and look 2 birds behind it, there is a gadwall facing left. 2 wigeons further to the right, we come to a black and white bird (?), but behind that there is another gadwall facing right. and just behind and to the right of that one is another one.

Ok, I do see the pattern of Gadwall. Thanks, that helps.
