I went to the Fraser River boat launch to look for different gulls, but found a Western Grebe instead. It was in the middle of the river swimming slowly upstream, it was dark and raining so I decided to see how good a picture of the Grebe I could get. I took some pictures and as it was getting closer I put the camera down and started watching with the bins and wait for it to get closer for more pictures. As I watched a large sturgeon jumped out of water striking the grebe, sending it flying. Two weeks ago I saw a sturgeon jump at the same location, it was about six feet and completely cleared the water. What a sight! I've seen this as well when along the Fraser River. About a month ago at Island 22 I saw three sturgeon jump. I wonder if they're excited for the Pinks as they are predatory and will eat salmon whole.
