While on a (non-birding) hike up Mt Frosty with some friends, we happened upon a nice male Spruce grouse: Spruce grouse by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr We also encountered this same bird on our way down. He just stood there and looked at us, while we stood only a few feet away from him. At one point he even appeared to go after a Snowshoe hare that hopped by .

On Friday Oct 6, Dave and I saw a rusty morph Ruffed Grouse on the road around Seabird Island. It was between Ewalooth Rd and Camp road. Like you said, a fool hen. It walked slowly across the road, absolutely in no rush, but never gave me a good profile look. At least I got a picture of it. Last time I saw one, it was on Hawkins-Pickle road, but a gray morph. There seem to be a lot of Spruce Grouse in the Manning resort area this year. My fam saw quite a few places on our walk around Lightning Lake in September.
