Hi fellow birders. All these posts of birding in California and Texas has got me excited. Marily and I are heading down to the Lower Rio Grande area for a week at the end of February. Any advice from any of you as to what are absolutely must visit areas? We will be resident in Alamo, just east of McAllen. John Vooys

Wow, John, Lower Rio Grande at the end of February? Sounds like a dream 'vacation' to me! No, I can't give you advice, but I sure look forward to a report when you return! SE Arizona and/or Lower Rio Grande are the next 2 on my dream list. I have already bought a guide for both! My trip would need to be a Mid-March (Spring Break) or summer trip though. I have the feeling that the Gulf of Mexico would be more appealing than SE Arizona to my non-birding wife...
I hope you have an awesome time. Are you taking a camera?
Dave
P.S. I also missed both Slaty-backed Gulls in the valley, so do not fear, when (not 'if') Gord finds one, he is sure to let us know! I can't complain, after you showed my an Ivory Gull on Nov. 11!

Hi, John.
I can't really say what places in the LRG would be good in February, as our trip was in the summer, but we found Bentsen very good. We went back there several times, and the park naturalist, Jim was his name, I think, was super knowledgeable and super helpful.
