I know Thor planned on reporting our trip to Vancouver Island yesterday before he left this morning for Mexico, but he must have been in too much of a rush to get around to it. He picked me up at 4:15 a.m.Frid. the 28th [yes I said a.m.] and off we drove into the snow flurries toward the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal to catch the 6:30 sailing. We arrived at our Nanoose Bay destination at 8:45 and at 8:50 in flew the beautiful, male Black-throated Blue Warbler. He has been coming to a suet feeder since Dec 22nd and we knew we had better get over to see him before he disappeared. Both Thor and I have seen this species before but wanted this one for our B.C. lists. Most of you will have seen the photo of this bird in Friday's edition of the two Vancouver papers, but we took some too, and he truly is a beauty. If I can figure out how to post them i will do so. I promise!
Anyone wanting to see this bird can do so by contacting The Backyard Bird Store in Nanaimo where arrangements may be made. Their number is 250-390-3669

Just in case someone was thinking of going over to see this bird, it has been made known on a couple of local birding lists that January 1 was the last day the homeowners were going to open their yard to birders wishing to see the Black-throated Blue Warbler in Nanoose Bay. Vancouver Island birders were expressing their gratitude to the homeowners for their gracious hosting of many birders over the time it was there, and their understanding of the desire of the homeowners to resume their normal life.
