After reporting seeing a male Wood Duck diving in shallow water at Cheam Lake, I saw a hen doing it as well several times.
I would think that I would have noticed such activity before. Usually, I see them feeding on the lake by picking things off the top of the water or sticking their faces under a bit. Come to think of it, I dont recall if they dabble for food like a Mallard would.
They sure are not graceful divers! A dive is executed with much splashing and a lot of effort. They seem to have success doing it though if the weeds and things they bring back up to eat is any indication.
Any similar sightings or knowledge? A Google search on the topic has not brought up anything.
