My wife and I were sitting outside having a glass of wine about a week ago and noticed there were a lot of birds coming into the yard. Mostly robins, but also a Swainson's thrush. They were gobbling up something in the lawn that on closer investigation turned out to be beetles. We watched as one after another climbed up blades of grass and then buzzed unsteadily up to a maple behind the fence. Quite a few of them were snapped out of the air by the birds.
I did some googling and I think we were looking at invasive eurasian chafer beetles? They were only there for a few days, and we only ever saw them in the evening. The birds still seem to be looking for them though. The Swainson's has been a regular every evening. We also see a few black-headed grosbeaks hanging around, though I couldn't tell if they were after the beetles or not.

James, some nice birds for the yard. Sounds like chafer beetle action there and nice to see some natural control methods at work.
