I recently heard that long-time birder and significant contributor to BC's birding community Wayne Weber passed away. I met Wayne for the first time quite memorably as a new park ranger at Cheam Lake many years ago when Least Flycatchers showed up and two pairs ended up nesting. We both walked the heavily mosquito-infested trail enjoying the sight which was, not as yet, something overly common. Prayers and thoughts to his family.

Hi Gord, I saw a posting on Facebook about Wayne from Dick Cannings a couple of days ago. Like you, I am sorry to hear about his death. I had come to know him reasonably well and was soon very impressed with his knowledge and ability to find a rare bird. A Northern Parula warbler in the southern Okanagan was ticked thanks to Wayne. Also a White Wagtail in Delta which I was unable to pick out from a large flock of pipits I have to credit Wayne for. It seems that all super birders have to have a quirky side and Dr. Weber was no exception. I knew he had had a heart attack much too young a few years ago but I think it took too much out of him for a full recovery. He will definitely be missed.

A few years ago I was twitching a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper somewhere and I ran into Wayne there. He mentioned a sighting I had of a Sharpie about 5 years earlier. I looked at him and said how do you remember that and he said because I had seen it in August and that was very unusual for a Sharpie. He had a remarkable amount of knowledge stored away.. Truly a legend.
