I've only been up there twice (both on the last 3 years). Both times have found ptarmigan on the right (north?) Side of Flatiron. Basically if you're at the lake at the bottom looking up at Flatiron then stay as far right as you can and climb up for the top. We have found them along the edge of the cliff here both times I have hiked this. Good luck! Agreed with Randy--try the ridge above Flatiron. I'm about 5/6 for finding them there, and once I found a group of 27 ptarmigan.

Went. Found ptarmigan. And horned larks.
I should have been clearer that I’m a very slow hiker. Poor Jon was chafing at the bit and I told him to go ahead!
My body will be punishing me for a few days but it was a most amazing day!

I thought I'd share a few photos from the hike At the top of Flatiron was a small flock of around 15 Horned Lark, which were a pleasant surprise! A Golden Eagle was the only raptor I saw the whole day, and I only caught it when it was flying away... And finally, White-tailed Ptarmigan, which provided ample photo opportunities

I thought I'd share a few photos from the hike Beautiful shots of the Ptarmigan Jon. Looks like they are almost into winter plumage.
