Hello to all,
I went to Manning Park today to stomp around in the knee deep snow and pine beetles.
The first stop was at Hope Slide. I was surprised at how many birds were in the bushes/small trees there. After 20 minutes of boulder hopping, I had American Robin, Stellar's Jay, Oregon Junco, Tree Swallow, Vaux's Swift, Crow, Raven, Turkey Vulture, and a shy Townsend's Warbler.
A brief pass through the parking lot of Manning Park Lodge area added Yellow-rumped Warbler and Brown-headed Cowbird.
The next real stop was Beaver Pond. The snow was not too deep, and the birds were once again numerous. The pond area was loaded with Yellow-rumped Warbler, Common Yellowthroat, Song Sparrow, Belted Kingfisher, Mallard, Barrow's Goldeneye, and Ruby-crowned Kinglet.
The short birding day was ended at Lightning Lake. The walk around the lake yielded good birds. At one point I was enjoying lunch on a log and in the general area saw 3 of these fellows (I later added one more so saw 4 Three-toed Woodpeckers by the end of the trail)
I saw one of these to add some colour. (I ended up seeing 3 Red-Breasted Sapsuckers on that trail)
While following these exciting finds, my lunch was being stolen by these fellows.
So, the walk around the lake, especially around Rainbow Bridge, yielded Three-toed Woodpecker, Red-breasted Sapsucker, Brown Creeper, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Black-capped Chickadee, Varied Thrush, White-crowned Sparrow, Canada Jay, Golden-crowned Kinglet, Common Merganser, Bufflehead, and Bald Eagle.
The trip back to Popkum added Rufous Hummingbird at the west gate of Manning.
A great day in the snow. No rain until I was back in Hope!
