April 2021 Monthly Challenge

April is a fun month. Many of our winter species are still around and many of the migrants are on their way through our area. Shorebirds can be found in flooded parts of fields in East Chilliwack and Sumas Prairie. Yellow-rumped Warblers and Hammond's Flycatchers are among the more early arrivals but many others won't be far behind as the month progresses.

Probably too late for the March count, but I was talking to a friend of mine who has a farm with the old style hip roof barns that are ideal for Barn owl nests. He has had a Barn Owl nest in the barn for years and every year the owls have successful hatchings. His resident Barn Owls were living in his barn in February, March and now in April. Each year the owlets are banded and recorded by an owl ornithologist.

We have a Mourning Dove and Pileated Woodpecker visiting our back yard.

There was a pair of Northern shovelers and the usual gang of Greater white-fronted geese at Sardis Park today. I heard a Savannah sparrow while waiting in line at the Bailey landfill on Saturday.
