Saturday morning dawned bright and early for Dave and Jeff--around 5:15 for Jeff anyway, a little earlier for Dave. As soon as I got in the truck (I was ready and waiting with "all" my stuff), Dave gave me three options--Cheam, Manning, or Vancouver. I chose Manning, though seeing Cheam later today it would no doubt have been a beautiful view. So we headed back towards Dave's house. Anyway, we started off with Common Raven and a Northwestern Crow. At just after 6:00 we stopped at Hope Slide, hoping to pick up a MacGillivray's warbler. (Deep breath) So I went to grab my binos, and they were nowhere to be found. I couldn't believe it. I had left my binos on the ledge by the front door! Anyway, Dave is not going to let me live that one down for a while. He wasn't too keen on sharing his binos, so we went back to his house to get another pair, picking up Steller's jay, Glaucous-winged gull, and Canada geese. At just after 7:00, after a flyby of a Northern Red-shafted Flicker. we were at Hope Slide again. We managed to see a dove of sorts--Dave was thinking Eurasian collared, but we didn't call it. Well, back on the road again we finally got to Manning. Around the lodge we picked up Red-naped sapsucker, Black-capped chickadee, Mountain chickadee, Hairy Woodpecker, Barn swallow, Tree Swallow, Yellow-rumped warbler. The horse corral on the way to Lightning Lake was going crazy with birds--we picked up 10 species in 15 minutes or so (good things we had 2 pairs of binos). On the thrush side of things, we found American robin and Swainson's thrush. We also managed to find a Brown creeper, a bunch of Cedar waxwings, a Warbling vireo (life bird for Jeff ), a female Western tanager, an Orange-crowned warbler, a beautiful male Townsend's warbler, Gray jays, and a Brewer's Blackbird. Just before Lightning Lake we also saw Chestnut-backed chickadees and Golden-crowned kinglets. At the lake we found a Clark's nutcracker, 2 belted kingfishers, American crows and a family of Townsend's warblers. (Dave got a nice picture of the male a little later). Starting from Spruce Bay, we hiked around the lake. We found a female Three-toed Woodpecker (second lifer for Jeff ;D) We also heard a nuthatch after Dave tried imitating one, but we never saw it. Then Dave began to wonder if he could call a woodpecker to him. Has anyone else had success with that? We managed to see a Common loon, which we tried in vain to make a Yellow-billed, as well as a really weird looking juvenile Pied-billed grebe and a Barrow's goldeneye. Wilson's warbler rounded out the warbler side of birds to 4. Up at the alpine meadows we saw a Cooper's hawk, and a juvenile Red-tailed. Near the top we caught a Chipping sparrow in our view, as well as a marmot. On the way home, we managed to make our species list number 40 by adding Red-winged blackbird, Turkey vulture, Rock dove, and our beloved European Starling. Unfortunately no lifers for Dave, but two for Jeff. Well, Dave, I think, is planning to spruce up this report with a few pictures and maybe a few comments about some birder who forgets his binos....
Feeling ashamed,
Jeff ;D
