My brother and I went to Manning park for the morning.
Started off by driving through the Lodge area where we saw a pair of Violet-green Swallows, a Junco, some Cedar Waxwings, and the first Thrush of the day (an American Robin)
Driving down the road to Strawberry Flats, there was a deer along the road, not sure if it was white-tailed or mule. Also saw our first Snowshoe Hare, which I'd never seen before (only tracks)--we'd end up seeing a total of 5.
At Strawberry Flats we walked a kind-of isosceles triangle by heading west down the trail, up the "bunny [ski]hill", and then back along the road to the ski-hill. Most notable birds were:
1 Red-naped Sapsucker, which decided a lamp post would make an excellent percussion instrument
1 Finch sp. which I think is likely a Purple, but it might be Cassin's? Would appreciate opinions on it.
3 Sooty Grouse, who didn't want to show themselves
7 Townsend's Warblers, First Of Year for me.
2 Chipping Sparrows

the finch:
After getting back, we checked out Lighting Lakes (because, well, why not?) which had a nice amount of species (19)
It was a pleasant surprise to see a Mountain Bluebird. Other nice birds were: a Clark's Nutcracker, and 3 Canada Jay.

Was going to check the Cascade lookout afterwards, but it was closed (I think Nick mentioned that it was closed when he went too) because of "Hazard Trees" I think.
On the way back to Chilliwack we stopped at Cayuse Flats, which didn't seem like what I'd consider flats at all. It's bit of a muddy parking lot next to the stream in that valley, with a logging road through coniferous forest. We didn't stay long or go very far. Most notable bird was a Sharp-shinned Hawk (presumably a male due to its small size).

It was a nice trip. Also of note was a Black Bear along the highway.
Stopped at Hope Airport on the way back, which had 2 Western Kingbirds (south fench), and 2 Eastern Kingbirds (on the east side).
