I am not sure why they call this a non breeding Loon. I can dream up some funny reasons but maybe one of you could explain. Do they never breed or is this just a stage they go through? This shot shows great on my Mac but might be a shade dark on some PCs but it is nice and close. This guy just finished a Lobster dinner.

Lew, the term 'non-breeding' refers to the plumage of the bird. It can also be referred to as 'basic' plumage. This is the plumage worn by birds not breeding. 'Breeding plumage' (or alternate plumage) is the brighter colours (or more drab for camouflage in some).
I notice more and more birders refer to plumage as basic or alternate (there are some variations, probably worthy of its own thread) over the breeding or non-breeding plumage term.
By the way, AWESOME shot!!!

Thank-you teekaygee. Yes I did shoot it from the kayak, he didn't seem to mind me watching him eat breakfast either. First time I've seen one eating, it was very cool. I was using 400mm
