Fraser Valley Birders: This is not a commercial endorsement. I am just reading Bridget Stutchbury's, " Silence of the Songbirds ", Walker and Company, N.Y. It is a compelling read, and reminscent of Rachel's Carson's " Silent Spring ", written quite a lot time ago. It is shocking how many of the songbirds' populations numbers are in steep decline, due to a variety of reasons. The book, however, is not all doom, and gloom, and suggestions are made as to how we can avert the potential disasters forecast, including at the individual level. For those that like to drink coffee, for example, switching to shade grown coffee could positively impact survival rates for some birds, if enough of us did it. A good, and important, read. Cheers, Thor

I have just completed this book, Thor. I must say, it gave me great pause. Isn't it easy to take the things around us for granted. After reading it, I was most grateful that there are some small changes we can make in our daily lives that can have a positive impact on their plight. I have already changed over to organic, shade grown, coffee! I too, give this book a resounding endorsement - and would encourage those of us that take so much enjoyment from birds, seek it out for a fascinating and informative read. - Pat
