I went to Blaine to check out the Brown Pelican sighting and I had no luck on seeing it, I did check both the Blaine side and the Semiahmoo Spit side. There are huge number of Double-crested Cormorants nesting on the breakwater. A guy I spoke to says a conservation officer did a count and came up with over 1200 birds, not sure when the count was done but I bet I saw 500 plus birds myself. There was also about 250 Canada Geese in Drayton Harbor feeding along the waterline, in the winter I could understand it but it seemed odd to see that many at this time of year. I saw my first gull chicks. I was puzzled how they got up on the roof of the building as they are just balls of fluff and then I realized there must be nests up there, there were several dozen gulls at least on the roofs they seemed to be Glaucous-winged Gulls, there was even more spread out on the sand, water, dike and in the air. A Pigeon Guillemot was out in the water which was cool to see, 2nd time only for me seeing them.
On the Semiahmoo Spit side they had a Purple Martin box with at least 4 birds, possibly more and you could get so close. There were some peeps but I have not figured out what they are yet, I need to look more carefully at the photos. Lots more cormorants perched on the floats in this area also.
I suspect in several weeks when the migration south is more active it might be worth checking the area out again.

Nick, it is a good area to check out. You might know but Point Roberts is another nice area.
Too bad the pelican wasn't present.

That is a great area in the fall and winter. I saw my first long-tailed duck from the Blaine side. Drayton harbor is a great shorebird magnet, though it doesn't seem to get quite as many of the rarities as Boundary Bay.

Nick, if you are interested in Brown Pelicans; Westport, Washington is about a five hour drive and has numerous Brown Pelicans from July until October. Check the road conditions and eBird if you go. Nearby, Ocean Shores is good birding and had dozens of small deer on most of the residential areas near Gray's Harbor. Also, Bottle Beach is a go to spot for shorebird migrations. Bruce and Joanne
