Found this guy at Salish Pond last week. This is the third mallard northern pintail hybrid Ive seen in my years birding. I love how this guy has pretty much half of each species with not quite orange or gray feet, a long but curly tail, brownish green sheen on the head, the white neck ring starting to creep up the neck and body pattern. The bill seems to be mostly pintail though.

For fun here's the one from Reifel Bird Sanctuary. Very similar looking but the feet on this one are more washed out. I wonder if these guys would pair with a pintail or mallard hen. I think both of these birds are the direct result of a mallard and pintail but depending on which species they will nest with it could create a slightly odd looking bird with 1/4 of one, 3/4 of the other. Any thoughts on my theory?

I live very near the pond and walk there often. Now I will look for this fellow more closely. Have just joined this site this morning so am keen to get to know you all. I lived in Hope for 20 years....but at that time I was only knowledgable about crows, robins and gulls (thought they were the only ones who existed)!! Since I have become very keen on birding and am leaving in 11 days to bird in Delhi and on to Bhutan. Will join some of you for some birding upon my return. Thanks Mac for the info on this site. Alice
