Looks like it's going to have a banquet.... That's a Great Blue Heron in it's talons. ( very large crop )

Great shot! Was it at one of the colonies/heronries? Since the young have started to hatch at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, I'm hoping to see this sort of behaviour over the next few weeks. I know, it's horrible for the heron...

Great shot! Was it at one of the colonies/heronries? Since the young have started to hatch at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, I'm hoping to see this sort of behaviour over the next few weeks. I know, it's horrible for the heron... Nature looks after itself and considering they don't go to restaurants food is what's available. As much as I don't like to see dead things I was pleased it flew by knowing it probably has young to feed in a nest somewhere. That shot was taken while I was shooting aircraft at Vancouver Airport. It's beak is open not because it's making noise. It was fighting a brutal headwind and I suppose it was probably getting tired. That's quite the load that offers up a lot of drag.

The circle of life... not always pretty, but always amazing! The baby herons are squawking at the Heron Reserve in Chilliwack and I caught sight of a couple of them today as well as hearing their chattering.
I've seen a few ravens flying recently with their beaks open - maybe it helps them cool down as well as letting them breathe easier?
