After the winds, 20 cm of snow and freezing rain brought in:
-a dozen or more Varied Thrushes -3 female Downeys at the same time and getting along surprisingly well I recognized our regular female Downey because the minute she saw me pass by the window she flew onto the sill and waited for a cashew while the others were content with the suet and peanut feeder. -two pairs of Hairy Woodpeckers (so much for territory right now) -plus the above listed species except for the robin -the immature Flicker had trouble landing on the ice covered trunks and decided that our cedar boards were easier... that kept us hopping

Deb, does the downy take the cashew from your hand? It's neat enough that she knows to come looking when she sees you! Cute!
Amazing how cold weather removes the territory and most of the fighting.

Hey Gord, No, we've never been able to handfeed a downy. They're not as friendly as the hairies, although we did have one very cute male downy who use to flutter in front of our faces so that we would put a cashew out for him as a long as it wasn't too close to where we were sitting. This behaviour was learned during nesting season when they seem to lose some of that inhibition. Our downies observed the hairies being fed and would follow them around -it was almost comical to see a hairy paired with a downy. The hairies didn't seem to mind and the downies were content with the leftovers afterall, they were more bite size after a hairy was done chopping up the nut.
