The Darkeyed Juncos returned to our back yard on September 20, a sure sign fall is here. A sharpshin hawk spent the whole day chasing the Stellars Jays, as well as one of our resident Pileated Woodpeckers. It was unsuccessful and I think the Jays had the most fun playing "catch me if you can". What a backyard airshow. The Jays would land a few feet away from the hawk and taunt until the hawk chased. I have renamed a flock of Jays. I call them a "TORMENT " of Jays.

A Torment is a good description!
A sure sign of the turning season for me is the arrival of the juncos which happened around the same time as yours came.
