John Vooys and I went to the ends of 104th and 96th Streets on Thursday morning. Thousands of shorebirds were foraging and resting on the mudflats. Since the tide was way out we couldn't ID all of them, but we still saw a good variety. I saw my first Lesser yellowlegs here. The list for Boundary Bay: Black-bellied plover 300 Killdeer 14 Dunlin 4 peep sp. 1000s dowitcher sp. 2 Greater yellowlegs 10 Lesser yellowlegs Ring-billed gull 1 gull sp. 5 Barn swallow 3 American robin 1 Euro starling 50 American goldfinch 1 After this we went on to Reifel to see the recently-reported Wilson's phalaropes and Stilt sandpipers. The outer ponds were alive with shorebirds of various species. Came across a young male Song sparrow that was learning how to sing. We also saw the first Black-crowned Night heron of the season. Some Long-billed dowitchers were seen: Long-billed dowitchers by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr The Stilt sandpipers were hanging out with other peeps: Stilt sandpipers by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr We saw 42 species throughout the morning, 6 of which were lifers for me.
