This house finch has been around my feeders this week. It actually looks like it is missing an eye. I guess it could be an injury that is severely swollen. Doesn't seem to be sick though - it's flying well and eats regularly at the feeder. Poor thing. -Pat

Yes, looks like avian pox. It can also get on the feet as well. Poor bird. Keep an eye on it and keep the feeders clean. The little hawks often catch these unfortunate birds fairly quickly which limits the time they have to possibly infect others.

Yes, avian pox is a nasty disease and wiped out a pair of our backyard towhees a few years ago. Very sad to watch the progression... I remember the female towhee literally stayed in one area and fed constantly as though she were starving. If you'd like more information, I've provided a link below: www.unbc.ca/nlui/wildlife_diseases_bc/avian_pox.htm

Oh yikes!! Thank-you all for informing me about this dreadful disease. I'll do some research to see which other birds are at risk and how contagious it is. And yes, my feeders are getting disinfected right away! - Pat
