What a bird year- seems like the numbers of certain species have rebounded. I noted last Spring-Summer that the Song sparrow and R. Towhee, in particular, had three nestings.
This is just yesterday's visitors:
Orange-crowned warbler American goldfinch Ruby-crowned kinglet White-crowned sparrow Red-breasted nuthatch Rufous hummingbird Black-capped chickadee Chestnut-backed chickadee Spotted towhee Song sparrow Robin Red-shafted flicker (hybrid male) Junco (no white markings yet) Pine siskins Hairy woodpecker Downy woodpecker Pileated woodpecker Red-breasted sapsucker Steller Jay

Wow, Deb! Nice variety of birds! Since yesterday, I have seen an Am. Goldfinch at the feeder, lots of Female house finches--but not one male! Anyone else noticing this? I wonder if they are "away" staking out territories, and perhaps defending their patch? Wish I was closer to some brushy areas, however I guess that I should not complain with the "hit and miss" varieties that I have had over the winter---Al

Hi Al- Actually I haven't seen purple nor house finches in a while. Of course, the pine siskins have most of the feeders staked out so the other finches are giving up pretty quickly. Wish the Am. goldfinch would try a little harder! BTW nice photo of the cardinal. Deb

Thanks for that, Deb--I have had the Goldfinch--ES here off and on all day--usually 2 males, one a little drabber than the other. I will post a recent pic--took a couple of pics, but missed an opportunity for another visitor ---Al

I must have the market cornored on Purple Finches...I have about 2 dozen in my yard - equal numbers of males and females....as for the House Finch, I've had very few, usually only one or two pairs. Here's a list of a typical day in my backyard right now (which is also hopping)
Steller's Jay (a dozen or so) Dark Eyed Junco (dozens and dozens all day long including a Slate Colored) Song Sparrow American Goldfinch (up to 6 yesterday) Pine Sisken Red Wing Blackbirds White Crown Sparrows Purple Finch Chestnutback Chickadee Black Cap Chickadee Brown Headed Cowbird (just the last few days) Band Tail Pigeon (6 or 7 a day) Robins Towhee Northern Flickers (3 yesterday, 1 female & 2 male - all red shaft - no hybrids this year so far) Rufous Hummingbirds Ruby Crowned Kinglet (occasionally - lots at Eagle Point Park - the odd one gets this far)
Oh and at least one little native squirrel and a chipmunk as well

Sounds, from the posts--things are hopping all over the place!--Read your report too, Gord, nice collection. From Deb's and Kathy's reports--still makes me want to be a little closer to the bushy areas---Al
