Hi all, The hummingbirds seem to have disappeared from my feeders --is there anyone else noticing the same thing?? I think I've heard the male a couple of times but I haven't seen them at my feeders for at least 10 days, if not 2 weeks. I've cleaned and refilled them pretty faithfully (the last time was Tuesday), and my mixture is between 1 to 3 and 1 to 4 parts, so I'm kind of confused and disappointed. ???Any ideas??

Jeff, I have had the same concern as you have--I refreshed my feeder last night and I had a male Rufous here this afternoon for perhaps half a dozen visits then nothing! I have noticed no other "transients" either. Having said all of that--I must mention to any/all who read, that I live on the third floor of a "low rise", perhaps that is a detracting factor, as hummers like (I think) to be in close proximity of foliage, for protection?

One can get an idea where people with hummingbird feeders live based on the activity of hummers at these feeders after about the middle of May. Generally by now, all are on breeding grounds. DB lives where many nest, so he'll have hummer action right through until they start to leave south. Jeff and fouram, living in more of an urban setting, will see most action during migration and have a lull in activity during nesting period.

Rats!(to the lull!!)--As I type-(I just arrived home from a trip south) I heard ( at 10:00) a Hummer nearby (their particular/peculiar "BUZZ" is quite distinctive when you attune yourself, anyone else have any similar/same occurrences?--Al

Hi Al! The lull sucks, I used to get it too when I lived at home. I cant say Ive ever encountered a hummer after dark myself or heard of it until today. Interesting note!

Again! It is 21:15 and had my distinguished visitor here --and again as I type!!! the very specific "buzz" gives him away---wonders if I have a late night "7-11" visitor who is used to having a " late nite snack"?--Never mind --I am happy with all of my blessings--Al

Jeff, I wonder if you still have a dearth of Hummers? It seems as if, as soon as I change the feeder I get a visitor or two the same day--then nothing! I have cleaned out the feeder every time first with soap and water, and a good rinse, vinegar and water (roughly 50/50 concentration) and another one or two good rinses. I also use cube sugar for the mix as I know that cube sugar is much purer than granulated. I am doing (I think) all I can to get them on a regular basis --but I guess the final decisison is up to the birds

Nope, still no hummers. I think I had one visit last week that I saw, but that's it. I usually clean the feeders with some vinegar and hot water. I still hear them around the yard at least several times a week though. What Gord said about nesting period makes sense, but I don't remember it being this bad other years!! ???Oh well, just have to wait and see, I guess. Interesting note on the cube versus granulated sugar. I didn't know that!
