My chickadee house appears to be a huge attraction for bees. Last fall I cleaned it out, and there were a few bees inside under the roof. I can't remember if I sprayed it or not. Whatever the case, when the chickadees displayed only a limited amount of curiosity in the birdhouse this spring, I took it down and found bees in there again. I didn't think Raid would be good for the birds so I washed it out with water and vinegar, making sure I got all the bees out. I put it back up and for a few days my hopes were high as I saw the chickadees go in the house a couple of times. However, they soon disappeared. Even the house sparrows, once they had kindly excavated the hole a little so they fit in, did not stay. I took it down the other day again only to find more bees in it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it okay to shoot some Raid in there? Should I move it somewhere else? Anybody's advice is appreciated, even though it's too late for chickadees this spring, I think.

I dont think Raid would be a good idea either.
What a pain! I would say move the box and make sure to scrape out the nest very well from the roof. I looked around and didnt see any solutions to keeping wasps out of birdhouses. One encouragment was that it doesnt seem to happen often, and this has been my experience as well. Good luck!

Our local bird supply house on Young has "Mason Bee" houses for sale, they are tube affairs with little roofs over top to keep off the rain, I am wondering, if you supply a couple of these little places for Mason Bees, (if that could be the variety of bee you have) it may preclude their use of the bird house? Just a suggestion---Al
