We are still flooded with Evening Grosbeaks over here at the Wetlands. Is it normal that they would stick around so long, or are they addicted to my Sunflower Seeds?

Ive been noticing an increase in Grosbeaks the last couple years. There is even a flock of 20 birds or so in my area that have been around for the winter. They flew over this morning. Typical of these kinds of birds, their numbers fluctuate with highs and lows and/or tend to move around a lot too. I bet this year will be a peak in the numbers. You may have some all or most of the summer. Put out some natural coloured yarn, bits of burlap threads etc in 3 - 5 inches in length in a loose ball and hang it in a tree so they can get at it to see who collects nest material. I think nesting data for evening grosbeaks is limited so it could be interesting to see if they nest.
Stock up on the sunflowers too!!

I had a bunch of evening grosbeaks in my yard yesterday for the first time since last year. My feeders were near empty so I decided to fill them up even though that meant I'd scare the grosbeaks off. I was afraid they wouldn't find anything and wouldn't come back. Unfortunately they were gone by the time I had my feeders filled up, and so far they haven't come back--rather disappointing. Their stunning colours make them good candidates for getting others interested in birding. --Jeff
