Someone recently asked where all the finches are. We have had a good numbers at our feeders, not only the normal house finch but the orange variant as well. We also have had a few Gold Finches but no Siskins.

Good to hear about the finches! A little concerning at the lack of no pine siskins though. It seems to be fairly widespread where no siskins are being seen in BC and Washington.

Have had a little flock of about 8 House Finches showing up at my feeders but only in the last week or so. Haven't seen a Purple Finch for ages, but I remember being concerned about the lack of them last winter too and then they showed up in the spring. I haven't seen a Pine Sisken for months.

Ive been seeing good numbers of house finches that seems to be increasing.
Purple finches are hit and miss for me in the winter. I too remember them being more common towards spring at my feeders. They are more easy to find in the late spring when they start to sing. Maybe they tend to migrate or move from the area for the winter and come back to breed?
There was a report of pine siskens at Gibson's a few days ago. Encouraging!
Speaking of finches, I saw a goldfinch at feeders in Popkum on the 19th. Slipped my mind as I didnt have my notebook with me.

Just got back from visiting my daughter in Errington on Vancouver Island (just outside of Parksville) - she had a pair of Purple Finch at her feeder - no House Finch and no Pine Siskens.

We have had house finches off and on the last month at our feeder backing Cheam Wetlands. The other day a pair of Purple Finches were hanging around. Here is a shot I took of the male. We also have had no pine siskins this winter. Last year we were going through barrels of niger seed!

Nice pic! Here's a house finch for comparison. I remember the days when I mixed the two up constantly; because I was only seeing house finches! Once I saw the real purple finch it just got easier. And the yellow variant.
