Had a pair of Evening Grosbeaks at the feeder today. The first ones I've seen for a few months. Also a Gold Crowned Sparrow and Fox Sparrows have been showing up the last few days.

Kastern, do you find the evening grosbeaks to be very irregular? When still at home when operating my feeders I could remember going a year without seeing them, then getting upwards of 40 for a week or two. They seemed to come primarily winter time, but I can remember early summer getting them as well. Not like most feeder birds that are generally predictable unless it's a cold snap and wierd things are happening. Been bumping into a few fox sparrows too lately, but no gold-crowns since earlier fall.

Yes, I do find evening grosbeaks to be extremely irregular. Can go for months or even a year or more without seeing any. Sometimes they show up and stay for weeks, other times it's just for one feeding and then they are gone again. The last couple of years I've had them show up in the yard with fledglings in late July or August.....so they have to be close by.
I just ventured outside in the pouring rain......and to my utter shock....the tan morph White Throated sparrow was in my front yard at one of the feeders!!! It was a case of 'what the heck is that!!' Did a double take thinking it was a house sparrow - no - and it wasn't the Gold Crowned that I'd seen in the back yard in the morning - then it dawned on me what it was. Managed one very poor photo.

Have had one lone female Evening Grosbeak at my feeders again today. First one I've seen since the one reported on November 9th.

Quite the variable species arent they! I actually ran into two different flocks today. One in Hope and the other at Cheam Lake. Always treat to find, and even better to see at feeders. I bet even just the one is going through the sunflowers! I dont think I saw where you mentioned the white-throated at your feeders back then. Nice!!

Today there is no sign of the female, but a lone male was out there this morning. I go through so much bird seed in a day one grosbeak doesn't make much difference. I go through an ice cream pail of ground feeder mix a day and fill a couple of feeders with black oil sunflower and it is often all gone by noon. Right now the sunflower is actually lasting longer as there are very few finch types around and the Black Cap Chickadees seem to be busy in the bush right now, the Chestnut back prefer the suet (which is gone by mid morning) and the peanut feeder. Main consumers are the Red Wing Blackbirds and juncos, toss in a half dozen Towhee, some song sparrows and Stellar's Jay and it doesn't take long to go through the seed.
