Male Westerns do have a small red crown that is usually hidden but flares up when they have something to prove to a rival.

I've only ever seen one once, but that call is certainly conspicuous when when they are around. It's very loud for such a tiny bird.

So Deb, did you get a chance to listen to the clip I posted? Was I right?

That is an American Pipit. Good call.

Seeing 4 or 5 fledgling Western Kingbirds huddled together on a telephone wire is a favourite image from my childhood. Maybe I'll have to head out there and have a look, just for old time's sake.

If it was a Swainson's that would also explain why you've never seen it. They are just about as secretive as birds get, so they rarely stray from heavy cover.

I grew up in Vernon, so there were always lots of kingbirds around (both species). I think that Westerns are probably my favorite bird: beautiful, native to my home town, and full of attitude.

Are Roadrunners closely related to any other bird species? They're bizarre.

I saw the Spotted Sandpiper there as well on Tuesday. To bad you missed the proud Mommy and Daddy Wood Ducks and their 14 little puffballs. They're very photogenic.

Ugh, those empidonax flycatchers are really tough to ID by sight. Their calls are the only way I can tell them apart.

Does your yard back onto a marsh area? I never seem to see Yellow-Headed Blackbirds more than a few feet from a bullrush.

Did you spot him randomly, or did some angry jays tell you where he was? Stellar's Jays have always been the best Barred Owl spotters I know.
