I think I saw that bird, or one with identical plumage, perched in the big redwood in front of Evans Elementary on Evans Rd. about a month ago. Thanks for the pics.

I've lived in the Valley for four years now, and it seems that there have been more swans every winter over that time period. Am I imagining this, or have wintering populations in this area increased?

I'm surprised that it's legal to release non-native species for hunting purposes, regardless of how long there have been wild populations here. It's clear that they don't pose to threat to native species at this point, but it still seems to there would be legal impediments to that sort of thing.

Someone is releasing pheasants? How come? Do you have any more info on this? I'm a Vernon boy originally, so I grew up with lots of pheasants around. I know they're not native, but I love seeing them anyway.

Immature white-crowned sparrows are one of those birds that trick every birder at some point. They look like a totally different species.

That's hilarious! No surprise then that the barred is sometimes nicknamed the "crazy owl". I once saw one swoop down and bounce his talons of a bicyclists helmet on Southwest Marine by UBC. Crazy owl indeed!

If you are interested in photographing Black Terns, I suggest that you take a canoe or other small boat to Kidd Lake near Merritt. That lake is an absolute paradise for marsh birds of all kinds and the terns are plentiful there. If you take the Coldwater Rd. exit from the Coquihalla you can take Kane Valley Rd, then Canton Rd to get there and you will get to drive through some really nice habitat along the way. If you don't stop for birds, it will take you about 2 hours (from Chilliwack, anyway).
Now that I think of it, I've seen Black Terns at the shallow unnamed lake at the junction of Kane Valley and Canton Roads. There is always tons of bird activity around that lake as well.
Let me know if you would like any other info about that route.

There was a group of about 10 Black Swifts over Officer's Row in Garrison Crossing in Chilliwack yesterday.

I think I have Kestrels nesting across the street from me in a large conifer at the southwest corner of the Watson Elementary parking lot on Watson Rd. in Sardis. I haven't actually seen a nest or young, but there has been lots of Kestrel activity and lots of noise in that tree lately.

I saw one in Ladner a few years ago. They are really fun to watch. They're incredibly active and noisy. Great bird.

There was an Olive-Sided Flycatcher ordering drinks at Cheam Wetlands today: "Quick-Three-BEEEERS." I told him I didn't have any for him, but that didn't stop him from asking again.

I saw a pair of Orioles among the large numbers of active birds at the GBHR this evening.
