More directions and info here: www.clubtread.com/routes/Route.aspx?Route=1All of the Ptarmigans that I've seen have been in the rocky areas above the small lake (often known as Tasty Lake). Other alpine and subalpine species can be seen on this hike as well, depending on the time of year (crossbills, pine grosbeak, horned lark, pipits, mountain bluebirds, sooty grouse, etc). Really it's just an spectacular hike and it's not too tough (except for that first section, but at least it's short).

I can attest to this. I went up to Flat Iron about a month ago and nearly stepped on a pair of Ptarmigan on my way down toward the lake.
