This morning on Sumas Mountain Regional Park I spotted something fly up from a more open area along a cut block that deserved closer scrutiny. It was worth the pause as this fine fellow appeared out of the cover and appeared to enjoy the sun's rays. After a bit, it hopped back down and proceeded to feed. I was not expecting to see a Rock Wren today but I did not complain. Other birds of note were a Hammond's Flycatcher, a flyby Townsend's Solitaire and my fall's first Ruby-crowned Kinglets. I also saw a Golden-crowned Sparrow which is my second of fall as I ran into one at Harrison yesterday.

Is it possible to get more precise directions to the Rock Wren?

Rock Wren on Sumas Mountain, sounds like a number 1 song hit. We love the photos, is this a first for our area? Great find, Gord. Bruce and Joanne

Len, sorry for the late reply and for the lack of detail too. It is about 4km up the road towards the parking lot overlooking Abbotsford and Mission. Look for the big cut block. Bruce and Joanne, it does have a good ring to it! It's actually the 9th sighting of the species for the area, but the furthest west of them all. There was one at the Hope Slide last summer then the next sighting is 2007 from Cheam Lake. Maybe you'll see one at the reserve!

Too bad, Len. Sorry again for the lack of directions. You were not far from it though.
Speaking of Rock Wrens one has been reported from Elk Mountain today! A good year for them! More details to follow I hope.
