This afternoon Rick Toochin phoned me to let me know he had a possible Lesser Black-backed Gull in a mixed species flock of gulls in the farm field on the east side of Whatcom Road just south of Highway #1. I met him there and when it flew we saw its yellow legs, verifying the identification. It later flew a bit east, to the field on the south side of South Parallel Road, just east of the entrance to Five Maples Nursery. It was still there when Rick, Dale Jensen and I left around 3:30.
Let's hope it stays in the area for others who want to try for it. Other locations to check the gull flocks would be farm fields including those along the east side of Sumas Way, and the rounded roof of the large metal waste transfer building on Industrial Way just off Riverside Road. The gull flocks often alternate between the transfer building and the nearby fields.
Damion, I'm guessing you can add Lesser Black-backed Gull to the November challenge.

Becke and I saw it recently. Becke got some pictures (can't wait to see!) and I was able to see it up pretty close both in flight and on the ground showing all its key features from eye colour and body structure and all between. The sighting was in front of the little nursery. It has moved and the high winds are not helping to relocate even though it sticks out like a fly on a tablecloth. It won't be far away though. Damion or Jamie definitely add to the list! A great addition.
I've been watching for one as it was only a matter of time until our checklist area would get one. Maybe we'll get a Great Black-backed Gull soon. We're running out of new gull species to discover here.

On my way back I took a peek and it has returned to the same place. Managed some photos as well this time!

Becke. Great photos and I am glad you (and Gord) saw the bird. I saw it late afternoon Wednesdayh, and Ed Klassen and I found it again this morning. It was a life bird for Ed. I'm glad you found and photographed one of the Franklin's Gulls also. The Lesser Black-backed Gull is a new Abbotsford and Fraser Valley bird for me. John Vooys, Abbotsford.

Becke, good photos! Here are my favourites. The long and narrow wings are very apparent!

That's a good bird for our area. First confirmed record too for the area.
Very good pictures Becke and Gord. Always nice to see pictures that show the yellow feet.

Hello birders,
the LBB Gull was still in the same place as it was first reported. I saw the bird at about 10:40 (Friday). Thanks Stan for reporting this rare bird.

Hey everyone, I stopped by at about 11:30 and 3 pm today and had no luck. Ran into Becke in addition to Melissa and Peter from Vancouver and Surrey and we drove some of the side roads but struck out. Hopefully it's spotted again!

Dave and Jason just called to report finding it on McDermott Road between Wellsline and Campbell Roads with about 150 gulls. They put in a good effort and were rewarded with finding it. The Lesser Black-backed was seen this morning on 0 Ave just off Whatcom which is right at the border.
I expect this bird to stick around for as long as things remain mild. If it cools and freezes for a bit it will move the gull flocks around and who knows where it will pop up next.
