Over lunch hour I went to check on gulls and what not. The gulls were not numerous or way out in the middle of fields. However, a flock of Brewer's and Red-winged Blackbirds netted me a female Rusty Blackbird! This was at the corner of Chilliwack Central and Prest Roads. There is usually a flock of blackbirds in this area each winter. As I drove up a rusty looking bird caught my eye right away. Our latest record for the species since 2012. More local info on the species at the link. www.fraservalleybirding.com/Species/Bird%20Accounts/Rusty%20Blackbird.htm

I tried this afternoon but no blackbirds. Lots of starlings around though and a nice-looking Rough-legged Hawk.

The blackbirds were back around midday just west of Prest Road on Chilliwack Central Road. The Rusty Blackbird among them. Sounds like they moved on as Dave tried for it this afternoon without luck. I wonder how far this flock of blackbirds wanders around. In the past there was always a flock wintering in the area and I would see them every other day or so.

I saw the blackbird flock at the same location this morning but half the flock was flying towards the airport so I was only able to look at the ones that remained for a minute before they followed suit. I did not see the Rusty but suspect she is in with the first group.
