A visit to North Bend, just across the river from Boston Bar, is always a productive outing and today was no different. Started off on Green Ranch Rd (Google maps has it wrong). Less than a km in there is a creek which typically has a nesting pair of Redstarts. Walked the road a bit first, Veery called. After about 10-15 minutes saw the male Redstart feeding. First time I have seen this male, usually it is the female.
Instead of turning around I continued on the road. I had thought the road ended there but the road continues on for a while. Just after there is a small straight stretch so I parked and walked the road. A decent amount of MacGillivray's Warblers, Lazuli Buntings and Rufous Hummingbirds. Had my first Willow Flycatcher up at North Bend.
MacGillivray's Warbler
Lazuli Bunting
I continued walking the road and came across three Merlin, one young one. Definitely nested in the area. A little further up I heard another Redstart singing. A female popped up out of the bush. Definitely a second pair of redstarts.
A few seconds after I took that picture. I saw what I thought was a small cow in the little clearing where the Redstart was. Quickly I realized my ID was incorrect. It was a small Black (brown) Bear. It was about 20 feet away from me but there was a barbed wire fence between me and it. With the potential of the mother being around I went back to my car.

Next area was Chamoux Rd. Right away I heard a Catbird singing near the clinic. First one up there for me.
Further up was a female Redstart. My fourth one of the day and given the distance each one there would probably be three pairs breeding up there.
Tanager and Grosbeak together
There is a nice field and in the area were Chipping Sparrows, Lazuli Buntings and a Western Kingbird.
Western Kingbird
Pair of Lazuli Buntings.
It's a cool place to visit. I assume very few places have species like Black-throated gray Warbler, Western Kingbird and Lazuli Buntings breeding in the same location.
