After visiting my father in hospital I returned to my car and while driving out of the peace arch hospital I saw something in the shade of a parked car. I stopped and there no more than five feet away was a Yellow-bellied Marmot. My wife wondered if it was an escaped pet but I doubt it.

What a weird sighting. Marmots are typcailly at high elevations. Wonder if it was at an animal hospital or something similar and escaped?

That is an interesting sighting. You really have to wonder how it could have got there. A few years ago there was a colony of them at the Hope Golf Course right beside the Coquihalla River. They made their way across the river and started burrowing in the fairways and even the greens. Unfortunately that necessitated a complete removal of the colony. Another one was discovered in the railway sidings in North Vancouver and I believe was it trapped and sent back to the Interior. It was thought to have arrived by a low bed truck/trailer. I wonder if one of the wildlife rescue organizations would be interested in knowing about it?

I've been back to the hospital numerous times in the last couple of days and have yet to spot it again. I did a complete route around the parking lot yesteday and couldn't locate it.

Gord, thanks very much. He is getting a little better each day and seems to be out of the woods.
