White-throated Sparrow at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve this morning. Going south down the dike road toward Hopedale. We really like Chris's new checklist for the month. Easy to note what birds are missing. Welcome to all the new people on the forum. Congratulations to Gord for running such a great site!

Bruce and Joanne thanks for the sighting. Enjoyed your August journals. Had a chance to look at them tonight. Always a treat to see the Bobcat.
I received a report of a Barred Owl in Mission which is new to the list. Also Northern Shovelers from Harrison on Sunday. Small report up tomorrow.

A friend just sent me a photo of an American Bittern taken within the last couple of days at the GBH Reserve.
Chris I couldn't find this bird on your new "quick-find list" or did I just miss it?

Thanks for the addition Murray. I didn't include a few 'common' rare birds and Bittern is one of them. Bitterns are uncommon in our region but due to their secretive habits, they aren't reported often. A few others that come to mind would be Saw-whet Owl and Northern Pygmy Owl. Like the term "quick-find list".
Also added Sora and Northern Goshawk from the recent reports.

A Golden-crowned Sparrow, singing no less, was at Island 22 this morning. Also added a Herring Gull from Harrison Lake from a little while ago that I forgot to add. From an early evening walk at Island 22 was a Hammond's Flycatcher.

Just realized that the Varied Thrush hasn't been reported yet this month. I saw several along the road going into Ross Lake on Wednesday. Surprisingly though, was the absence of any Ruffed Grouse. Usually they are a "slam-dunk" on that trip.

Thanks for the new species Murray. Pretty soon those Varied Thrush will be in the valley.
Excellent month so far. Almost at 160.

Today at Mill Lake, among hundreds of Canada geese, were eight or more Cackling Geese.
A Green Heron was on the old pilings at the west end of the lake -- first time I've seen one there for a while.

Stan, I was wondering when the first Cacklers would show up. A big flock of geese are in the fields near the highway on my way to work in the mornings and I've been pulling over to see if there's anything other than Canadas in there.
However, at Cheam Lake Wetlands today there was a lone Snow Goose among the Canada Geese. We'll probably get a Greater White-fronted Goose yet too.

Updated the list with Fox Sparrow which John Vooys saw in Abby today and Marsh Wren which I saw at Cheam Wetlands today. I was curious so I checked the numbers. This is the second highest month on record since 2008. The highest month was May 2011 with 175 species. The third highest month is May 2012 with 165 species. If anyone is interested you can look at the month/year comparions by clicking this link fraservalleybirding.com/monthly%20challenge.htm
