Hello birders,
I was out driving my little one around and I noticed four salamanders on the road at various locations. The salamanders where about as long as my hand (7 inches or so) from head to tail with dark, thick horizontal lines across the back. Just wondering if anybody might know what kind of salamander it was and if salamanders are migrational? I have lived in the Harrison Mills area for four years and haven't seen one until tonight.
Thanks for any information, Brent Schmor Harrison Mills

Brent, I suspect Northwestern Salamanders by description and the size. I'd almost thing it's too cool for them now, but then it has warmed up and got quite wet which might have activated them. Typically this species likes to be under logs and other hiding places.
I've never heard that salamanders are migratory or behave similar like Western Toads when they emerge from the water as toadlets.

Brent, found a picture of one that I took some years back.

Thanks for the information Gord,
that's the guy in the picture. The funny thing about all four sightings was they were heading west in quite different habitats. That's why I thought there may be some migratory pattern.
Cheers, Brent
