The new cameras coming out are amazing. I see Nikon has a point and shoot that is 36X, VR (Image stabilization) and 12 megapixel for about $400.

I've been watching them too Len. Canon has a 35x model and Fuji has one in the same range. Imagine, a 500 plus mm DX optical zoom, 1080 video, and the whole package weighs around a pound! I have read that they are a little tricky and maybe a bit soft at the long end though.

You are probably right about it being soft at 35X as you must need a tripod.

Yes the new P&S- SLR hybrids do seem to be getting better and quite long.
I use to have a Fuji with a 12-15x zoom(not sure) before. It was light and small and took surprisingly good pictures. Far superior to the P&S I owned before.
If you see how they rate it at 36x zoom, it's a bit misleading. The lens is actually a 4-144mm. They say its equiv to a 35mm ( 22.5-810mm), this must be because of the sensor.
With that being said even the old Fuji I had with 12x, I was very impressed with the pictures, it was great on holidays and outings as I did not have to lug all my SLR gear, it did have some advantage.
I would certainly consider one if you do not want a SLR, better pics than a typical P&S
My co-worker has the Canon 35X he is also very happy with it, and he is extremely happy with the HD Video

The weight of these things alone make it very tempting. I love using a harness for my bins, so much easier on the neck and back, but using a camera at the same time is very awkward. Plus I hesitate getting into expensive gear because I can't afford it, but also because it will get wet and take a bit of a beating. I'd feel a little better if less than $500 was on the line.
