Ziff, interesting sounding owl. Perhaps it has some albino feathers or is just happening to fluff out its lighter feathers at the time?

Gord, i wish i had your camera, it was a large white ghost of an owl. i had a great view with the bins. At first i thought it was the great grey but it lacked the bowtie. it was barred for sure, and the eye colour is characteristic according to Sibleys. As i say, the color was a perfect match for the snowy but it had a much larger head. And it had a yellow beak .Maybe what killed the squirrel .

I think it was last winter?? that someone reported a Snowy Owl flying across the road in the Lake Erroch area. This seemed like an odd spot for a Snowy as they prefer open areas. What area did you see the owl in? I wonder if it may be the same bird.

I searched the archives and found this by Kathy;
Snowy Owl? « Result #21 on Jan 10, 2008, 7:37pm » I'm not going to swear to this ID but I'm pretty sure I saw a Snowy Owl this afternoon. I was driving home from Mission on hwy. 7, in the pouring rain....it was 4:00 pm so getting dark and there was someone riding my bumper so I couldn't slam on the brakes.....but right at the Lake Errock store I saw this largish white, or very light colored bird fly across the road heading towards the trees on the left hand side of the road. It was flying level with very even, easy going wing beats. When I mentioned it to my husband, who drives the route every week day....he said that a couple of days ago, he thought he saw one just past the Deroche bridge...but again...it wasn't quite light and he just got the same sort of glimpse of a large white bird with slow steady wingbeats.

Fulica, Mt Lehman area, but it might well explain the other sightings. i really need a camera capable of getting these things, but i am waiting for some small digitals like the EP1 , tiny camera with a big lens.
