I was working on a paper today and I needed a break so even though it was raining I decided to go out to see what birds I could see at Jesperson.
I'll start with the Dowitchers first. When I was coming back to my car, to the left there is a big pool of water. Something similar would be the pool of water to your left just when you are entering Island 22. I heard something different that sounded like sandpipers so I turned to my left and saw a flock of sandpipers. I was hoping they would land because I was not sure what they were. They landed near the shore f the water so I headed down into the field to get a better look. As I got closer I realized that they were Dowitchers but wasn't sure what kind. I have seen Dowitchers before at Reifel. Luckily for me I had my MP3 player with bird calls on it. I matched up the call and it turns out they were Long-billed Dowitchers. They did fly away but there were 12 of them.
Other highlights include 6 Barn and 10 Violet-green Swallows flying over the water.
Here's a list of what I saw.
30 Canada Goose 6 American Wigeon 16 Mallard 12 Green-winged Teal 10 Ring-necked Duck 1 Bald Eagle 1 Northern Harrier 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 4 Killdeer 12 Long-billed Dowitcher 2 Northern Flicker 10 Violet-green Swallow 6 Barn Swallow 1 Marsh Wren 8 Yellow-rumped Warbler 2 Common Yellowthroat 2 Spotted Towhee 28 Savannah Sparrow 6 Song Sparrow 2 Lincoln's Sparrow 8 White-crowned Sparrow 4 Dark-eyed Junco 4 American Goldfinch

Chris, did you mean Violet-green Swallow instead of Tree? Tree Swallow would be a super find!!
Nice work on the Long-billed Dowitchers! Always fun to find a shorebird out our way.

Yes I did. I wrote Tree Swallow twice, once in here and in the monthly bird challenge and you think I would have recognized it. I was trying my best to spot a Tree Swallow but with no luck so maybe that's why I wrote it.

You and me both today! Quite a few Violet-greens buzzing around but nothing other than a few Barn Swallows mixed in from what I saw too.
