I went to the Lagoon today to see if I could spot the Horned Larks and the Longspurs and some waterfowl as well. When I got there I scanned the lagoon and manged to see Green-winged Teal, American Wigeons, Mallards and two Harlequin Ducks.
I spotted nine Horned Larks(a lifer) on the north side of the Lagoon and as I was watching them I heard a huge whoosh of air come right by me and within seconds I discovered what caused it, a Peregrine Falcon. A couple of seconds later another one came swooping by. They did not manage to get one by they sure got close. It was amazing to witness. Out in the lake I saw a Red-necked Grebe, Horned Grebe, 12 Coots, Common Loon and a Ruddy Duck. All of these waterfowl were spotted on the north end of the lagoon on the right in the lake.( If that makes sense). There was also a Ring-billed Gull on the shore as well. Lastly, there was a huge raft ducks out on the lake but just with binocs it was impossible to see what there were.
I didn't get to see the Longspurs but I was scanning the sparrows and did see White-crowned, Savannahs, and Song Sparrows.
After that I decided to go to Greenpoint. I saw Golden-crowned Kinglets, Chesnut-backed Chickadees, American Pipit, Bald eagles and a Yellow-rumped Warbler.
It's very nice out there and the rain cooperated for the most part. I would definately recommend to go out there because I was surprised how much I saw. Heres a picture of the Larks but the lighting is poor. Thank you to Kevin and Janne for their reports from yesterday because I would not have gone out there otherwise.
