My wife and I took a short 6 day road trip from Chilliwack to Revelstoke to Golden, Cranbrock and then home.
Some of the better sites we visited were:
- Beaver Ranch Flats - about 50 Km north of Merritt along 5A. 15 different birds including black terns and eared grebes. The black terns were at the south side of the lake near the ranch.
- Duck Range Road – To find take 97A south of #1 about 3km. We just drove up the road a few kms and stopped at a few spots. 10 different birds including chipping and vesper sparrows, mountain bluebirds, Townsend solitaire and a pacific slope flycatcher.
- Road from Pritchard to Chase – Take the road on the north side of the river. Cross the river at Pritchard and take the dirt road to Chase. Very good road in cattle country. 10 different birds found including, eastern and western kingbirds, western bluebirds, Say’s phoebe, western scrub jay and morning doves.
We were stopped at a small pond or wetland when the manager of the Pritchard Ranch stopped and said hello. He said they were trying to set up ponds all over the Ranch to encourage birds and other wildlife. I told him what a great idea it was for birders too!
- Skunk Cabbage Trail, Revelstoke Park – Well marked on TransCanada in the Park. Only 8 birds seen but least another 3-4 heard (veery). First of two lifers for the trip was a MacGillivray warbler. Lots of redstarts and red-eyed vireo
- Golden Wetlands – Just south of Golden. 15 different birds with the highlight being a bay-breasted warbler.
The second life bird of the trip was a gold eagle just north of Cranbrook.
- Creston Wetlands – Just west of Creston. Only about 12 birds. We did hear the wild turkeys but did not see them this time.
