I am a bit puzzled about this bird...Is is a Sooty? Hermit Thrush also seems a possibility... Anyone?

Hey Onejay,
Sorry, I needed to modify this post, I didn't read your post closely enough.
I were right with the "sooty", it's a Fox Sparrow. It's the little arrowheads on the breast and belly that helps me ID foxies. The ones that hang around our place are the dark, West Coast fuliginosas. I think that is what this guy is... Although it could be a unalaschcensis on its way to Alaska...
Just when you think your getting a bird nailed down... then you get into sub-species, hybrids or mutants and OH BOY!

Howdy wetlander,
Thanks for the reply wetlander. This bird was very dark colored, so that would make it the West Coast fuliginosa? Is that the same as the "Pacific Sooty" that the Sibley Guide mentions?

Yes, I believe so. I guess there are a few subspecies in the west and they are all "sooty". The Fuliginosa in the Pacific Northwest subspecies...
