Hi Deb, as you probably already know, these birds belong to the empidonax group of fly-catchers [commonly referred to as empids] which are notoriously difficult to Id if you don't hear their call or song. Where you live the only likely candidates would be Hammond's, Willow, or Pacific-slope. Of these, only the Willow shows no trace of an eye ring such as your photo shows. Also the Willow tends to favour riparian or riverside habitats such as where you live. So my best guess is the Willow.

I wonder about Western Wood-pewee. The dark face and no eyering (also good for Willow as Murray pointed out) and a hint of a vest on the breast makes me think about that.
Did they go "Pee-yer!!" a lot Deb? If they were nesting and defending territory they would have been quite vocal.

Gord, I'm afraid I don't recall the vocalization as the photos were taken from inside the house. Will look for them this year.
