Hi Trudi Not sure about the Sparrow but the first bird looks like a Vermilion Flycatcher. We are seeing many of them down here in Arizona.

I wonder about Vesper Sparrow as being a possibility. Good to see the trade for golf clubs for camera!! I like to multi task as well...when golfing it's a nice change from struggling around in the bushes looking for my golf ball (and soon in short order, my clubs too ;D ;D )

Thanx guys..I believe that 2 more can be marked from my list. The sparrow I looked at various pics before I was totally convinced (all vespers are not as cute as my guy!!)... Thats the trouble with golf courses ...such a great place for bird spotters...I must add for every bird I see my score takes a tumble!!

Trudi, while it's almost always difficult to identify an LBJ (little brown job) from a single picture, my money would go on a Savannah Sparrow. Based on the time of year, location, and habitat, it would suggest this species. Two of the clues are the strong facial pattern and the distinct white crown stripe. Like so many birds there is great variation in colour, patterning, and even bill size to further complicate matters. As I say however, this ID is based on a single shot, so keep them coming.
