Hi all: I had the chance to take part in a pelagic out of Sooke yesterday. There is a report on this trip on bcbirdingvanisland, a yahoo group, but, in case you don't subscribe to this group, here is a replicated report from the leader.
We left from Sooke in a rigid hull zodiac, under sunny skies, and little wind. There was a moderate swell on the way out, but nothing to worry about.
I think we got out as far as the Carmanah Lighthouse on the west coast of the Island. The entire trip took about 7 hours.
There were lots of seabirds, and pretty good diversification.
100 plus Pink-footed Shearwaters
2000 plus Sooty Shearwaters
12 plus Northern Fulumars
12 Pomarine Jaegers- certainly the most I have seen on one trip.
1 South Polar Skua- seen by two members of the group.
6 Red Phalaropes
100's of Red-necked Phalaropes
1 Sabine's Gull- a bird I haven't seen in over 10 years.
Hundreds of Gulls and Alcids.
In the previous week a Least Auklet, and a Manx Shearwater had been seen by the leader from land. Unfortunately, we weren't able to re-locate these birds.
A good time was had by all.
This trip included 12 individuals plus the skipper. The boat has a head; ( toilet ), and is fast. If there were 11 birders in the Fraser Valley who would like to take such a trip, I would be pleased to try and organize it. Inevitably, such a trip would involve an overnight stay in Victoria/Sooke.
Fraser Valley birders are welcome to respond to me on this site, or through my private e-mail address. Cheers Thor
