Something I have never seen on a river before was a very large flock of Common Mergansers who had gathered off of the eastern end of Matsqui Trail Park and were feeding on something in the water. There had to be at least 150+ birds with more scattered around on the sandbar and swimming around the area. I watched as the flock floated down stream for about 30 minutes and they continued to feed. What could they be eating at this time of year? r Good observation Nick. I think Oolichan run in the spring but I wouldn't know if that is what they are eating.

Len, good chance they might be. Juvenile salmon are leaving for the ocean too now so they could also be targeted.
